Late Thanksgiving and early Christmas

For our last day at Ilmesmühle Holger had invited his brother Christian, his French wife Ann and their daughters Natasha (15y) and Jacqueline (11y). Their dog Reglis also came as he is great friends with Moana.

Those are healthy looking cheeks.

Having grown up in America the Leue Family is used to having a Thanksgiving turkey and as they hadn’t come together for a while we made this late lunch/early dinner on Sunday. Our meal was a team effort with Holger being the main co-ordinator of timing and responsible for the most important part of any meal of this kind, the gravy! (Well and the bird of course).

Holger and the bird before it went int the oven.

We had roasted parsnips (a first for the non Kiwis at the table), roast Kumara (another first for the non Kiwis), steamed carrots, princess beans, tasty homemade stuffing, the creamiest of potato mashes known to man kind and a delicious gravy.
It was all very satisfying in deed. The fire was going, board games were being played and all the children went sleighing for the first time! They went for ages before the meal and then went back out until after dark once they had eaten.

Jacqueline, Nick and Tessa sleighing

I had a go at it as well…

…so did Holger…

Speed freak Ben weeeeeeeeee

…weeeeee and CRASH!

Moana and Reglis ran around all day playing either with each other or the children.

Moana and Reglis

They too were grateful for the yummy dinner and enjoyed the left overs very much before falling into a happy coma in front of the fire.

The mill froze over and look at the ice…in Germany it grows upwards….!!

Holger and Ann in the courtyard with the barn we stayed in.

May I just add that I remained unbeaten at ‘Halma’ (Chinese Checkers) last night. Armin…do you feel a challenge coming up?
Oma Anna still beat me seven years ago when she was 89 years old.
Off to sleep one more night at Ilmesmühle before leaving for Heilbronn.

The ‘Holger’ Photo was found

And this is the missing photo of Holger when he came and picked us up from the train station when we arrived last Monday…

This is Holger when he picked us up from the train station.

Nichtstun in der Ilmesmühle

Unbelievably we have been here at Ilmesmühle for nearly a week now.  We had one outing to a close by town Bad Heresfeld, and other than that we haven’t really been doing much at all, which has been great and very, very relaxing.  Just what we needed. Here are finally some photos of Ilmesmühle…

The main building.

The barn. Cows used to live here a long time ago and now we are staying here.

We have gone for walks most days, one was for an hour and a half.   That day we had really sunny weather, too.  The valley as well as the surrounding villages are so picturesque…

The road went on and on and on

The forest around the Ilmesmühle.

Local Farm House

The children really enjoy playing with Moana, who is a beautiful golden retriever.  Moana is totally devoted and loyal to Holger and she is enjoying the children’s energy, too.  Along the courtyard of the mill runs a narrow creek, which has a dam that has been slowly freezing over in the last few days.  The boys have been particularly taken with the thicker growing ice and are breaking it for Moana, as she likes eating it.

Moana likes jumping after snowballs.

I have had discussions with the boys about not walking on the ice and  hyperthermia in case of falling into the ice, however after two days of playing along the ice, the inevitable did happen and Ben fell into the ice.

I understand that at least he wasn’t trying to walk on it, but it was a case of lost balance as he and Nick were playing.  The boys told me that Nick helped him out of the water and then Ben came screaming towards the house, very upset, cold and slightly blue. I went outside and helped him out of the wet clothes, which was a mission and a half, and then we packed him into a blanket and in front of the fire place, where he slowly defrosted.

His clothes were taken off on the front steps and his shoes were tipped out.  This formed a little puddle on the steps, which was frozen in less than fifteen minutes!!  It was -9C this morning.  The clothes that I had quickly hung over the railing while Ben was undressing were frozen in the shape of the railing  by the time I took them down half an hour later.

Ben told me that he won’t be playing by the creek anymore…it’s good when we learn from our mistakes!  He really liked his hot bath shortly afterwards.

In fact he was lucky to be able to have a hot bath at that particular time as the heating system broke yesterday (Friday!) afternoon and it wasn’t fixed until just after midday today.  The heating guy had only just left when Ben took his plunge.

With the heating system not working the dishwasher didn’t work either, because the cold water pipes of the dishwasher usually are kept at an even temperature by the pipes of the heating system running just below them.  With the heating system not working and the temperature being -9C the pipes simply froze!  That too started working once the heater was going!

So, all is good again, Ben is dry, the heater is hot and we don’t have to do the dishes by hand!

Unfocused, but fun photo of Tessa..

Hanging of the railing.

Good night for now.

The ‘Old’ Map

Dear Blog Readers,

Some of you have noticed the new look at the top of the map and some of you (all Germans!) noted that this is an old map of Europe…in deed it is.  Around 1900-10, or so I am told.

I haven’t checked this with the blog designer (my brother-in-law, Barrie) but I have a strong suspicion that this was done on purpose!!  I do like the colours and I think they really go with the muted tone of the China map we had on there before.

This is just a quick note to re-assure you that this map was not chosen in ignorance (Barrie doesn’t do things in ignorance) but rather for artistic reasons and I suspect to amuse any British readers….?!?

I am delighted that you are looking so closely at the finer details of this blog!!

Norderstedt to Fulda

On Monday we said our sad good byes to the lovely people of Norderstedt.  Birgit, Marek and Jana we will see again in three weeks time when they will come to Munich for Christmas, but Ingrid we won’t see again until we come to Germany next time.  Birgit took all our luggage to the U-Bahn station and Ingrid travelled all the way with us to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, which was great as I didn’t have to concentrate too much on where we were going….

Back in travelling mode at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof

I meant to take a picture of Ingrid as the train was leaving but everything happened so fast that the train took off before I could even wave.  On Ingrid’s advice we had booked seats with a table and so we had a very pleasant and relaxing three hours in the train…

Great seat with table for games and food.

The children got more and more excited as the landscape turned a gentle white outside.  This was a day of firsts for the boys.  The first time they travelled on a proper train (I am not counting Greenlane to Britomart here), the first time they saw snow live and then when we got to our destination the first time to touch snow and play in it!

Eine Zugfahrt die ist lustig, eine Zugfahrt die ist schön… (German song, don’t worry)

We are allowed some sweets while travelling.

Our lovely friend Holger picked us up at Fulda train station and because I had told him which compartment we were going to be sitting in, he waited right outside our door.  There is a plan on the platform telling you where to stand for which wagon.

Holger was holding up a sign saying ‘TTNB’, just like our blog!  I did take a photo of him, which has since disappeared from the iPad…I think certain younger people were messing around with the photos when they shouldn’t have.

Holger lives in a beautiful old mill and across from the courtyard is the old renovated barn in which we have our very big bedroom with mattresses which feels much like a slumber party.  While the snow melted the next day, there is promise of more in the next few days.  So far they have managed to place a few well targeted snow balls, which seems to have satisfied until now.

Snow!!

Tessa enjoying her first snow in seven years.

I have yet to take some photos of Ilmesmühle (wow Holger just showed me how to make a ‘ü’ on my key board, yeah!) which really is a very stunning place.

Will take photos tomorrow instead of staying in my PJs until late afternoon….

Bye

The Snow!!!!

Dear All,

It is snowing really hard and it’s sometimes rain snow which is really  cool …

IT’S SSSSSSSSNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG

and  there are secret passages which are like Harry Potter.  I bet you know that I love Harry Potter. Anyway  there is even a trap door leading to the cellar and there is a dog called MOANA which is very funny because it is  the sea in Maori.

The sign on the house ‘Ilmesmuehle’, which is an old mill

This is Moana the Golden Retriever and she is very tired here.

missing you all, from, Ben

Tessa’s Birthday

It’s Sunday, 2. December and it is Tessa’s birthday.  We had a busy morning packing, but managed to get it all done in the allotted time frame, despite, not because of the children I might help. We went over to Birgit’s for lunch and as usual she had the table laid out beautifully and the house was a mix of birthday and Christmas decorations, as it is also the 1. Advent…

The beautifully set table.

Lecker ‘yummy’ food, some polish, some Kiwi, some German..oops that was the wrong picture but once it’s on here I don’t know how to get it off.

That’s the one I wanted with all the food on it.

Die Kinder

It was very nice and relaxing as we had bigger plans for the afternoon. We had booked two bowling alleys for an hour and Tessa invited some of the girls from Jana’s and her class to come along, part birthday, part ‘thank you’ as everyone had been very nice and helpful to her.  Tessa had been to a few friend’s houses after school with Jana and on her last day she again was invited to someone’s house for a few hours. Nick and Ben were at bowling, too and the balls were a manageable weight for everyone.  I liked the colours of them, too, minor side factor…

Tessa and Nick. The polar fleece for Tessa was a present from Ingrid.

I loved the shoes, they were too cool. These ones were Ben’s.

Some time into the hour all the lights were suddenly dimmed, the disco balls came down and the place was transferred into a disco bowling alley.  Glow sticks were handed out, dry ice gave it the mysteries touch and in the group on the alley next to us a lot of screaming added (something, not sure what) to the atmosphere.

Then a ‘Happy Birthday Song’ was played and all the birthday kids in the place received a glass of delicious tropical fruit juice served with a sparkling light…

Tessa and her tropical birthday cocktail

The winners stayed in the family with Jana winning in one group and Nick in the other.

Time for dinner.  Right next door to the bowling alley is a ‘Gasthaus’, a typical German restaurant, that is quite casual and feels and looks much like a pub.

The birthday group in the Gasthaus

What is Nick drinking here…Marek??

The girls enjoyed ordering whatever they wanted from the menu and Tessa had her first ever ‘cordon bleu’, a dish I just about always ordered when we were in a ‘Gasthaus’ as children.  In fact I had it today as well.  It’s is the typical ‘Schnitzel’ with ham and cheese inside that oozes out when it is cut.  It was served with amazingly good ‘Bratkartoffeln’ (fried potatoes) with Speck (bacon).  To make myself feel better I also ordered a salad with it…

Lots of Christmas deco here involve cold looking things…

This isn’t a gordon bleu but a plain Schnitzel, and it is Ingrid’s. Mine was too fast gone, as in eaten, to be photographed.

It was nice having another chance to chat to Ingrid before leaving tomorrow, as she will not be coming to Muenich for Christmas.  Nick or Ben took a nice photo of us together, too.

Hamburger Weihnachtsmarkt

On Saturday afternoon we took the U-Bahn into Hamburg to go to the Christmas Market.  As the shops were still open it was very crowded which Ben struggled with a little, but he really enjoyed the food and Father Christmas…more about him in a minute.

Birgit and Marek knew exactly where they were taking us for the best food.  Birgit and Jana had ‘Flammenkuchen’ in mind, which is a very thin pizza like dough with leek, bacon, cheese type toppings on it.  Tessa had the same, too.  While they were cuing for that, Marek went off to find his favourite dinner, which was ‘Meterwurst’ which is a very long and tasty sausage (by the metre).  I in turn had past a ‘Gyros’ stand and while that is Greek rather than German, it just tickled my taste buds and I had grilled pork with a tzaziki style dressing on it.  The same stand also made steak in a roll, so Nick was also sorted.  Coming to think of it, I have no idea what Ben had that night…I think he had a bit of everyone’s dinner.

I do remember however that he had desert…guess what Sabine, Tessa found another ‘Schlemmergebaeck’ stall and so her and Ben cued for that…

Ben and Tessa wisely bought the ‘big bag’ for Euro 4.

All children really enjoyed it and I think the makers at the Weihnachtsmarkt were even more skilled than the the ones from the Dom.  These ones were super fresh, warm and covered in icing sugar.  A delight!…

Ben has such a sweet tooth…like his Dad, Granddad and Grandpa.

Tessa looking smug that she managed to grab one, too.

Yum, yum yum!

Actually I just realised that I am not sure if Jana ever got any…?!

There were lots of stalls with lovely traditional offerings, lots of wooden Christmas carvings, tree ornaments etc.  Here a some that we managed to get close enough to to take photos.  It was very busy…

Wooden Christmas deco.

I was so tempted to buy one of those beautiful stars, but I know we will never see its lovely light at x-mas time in NZ as it isn’t dark enough outside.

These miniatures always look intriguing.

Oh, and there were also stalls selling hats, gloves, scarves and other warm things…

Jana looked great in this hat.

The highlight for many children at the Hamburger Christmas market is the appearance of Father Christmas (der Weihnachtsman).  He appears in his sleigh, pulled by reindeer and he tells the story of how he found ‘Rudolph’ and why his reindeer have the names they do.  He has a very deep voice and Ben really liked seeing him.  He videoed him so we can now listen to his voice when we want to.

We have a (rather bad) photo of him in his sleigh, too…

…Santa Claus has come to town…

Traditionally adults keep themselves warm at Christmas markets by drinking Gluehwein.  Birgit and Marek told us about a ‘Kinderpunsch’, which is a bit like Gluehwein for children, so while we were waiting for Father Christmas to come, who is very punctual at 18:00, Birgit braved the crazy crowd and came back to us with one cup per family to share. It really was very delicious…

Birgit appeared through the crowd like a knight in shining armour and hot drinks.

I love how all the flower shops are totally geared up for Christmas.  I guess it really works for them, too as there aren’t that many fresh flowers to sell in the middle of winter…

I like the traditional colours in the arramgements.

‘Das Rathaus’ ‘the town hall’

Marek you should be smiling..you are surrounded by beauty…

Have I mentioned it was cold?

We had a very nice time there, although we will take the advice from now on, to visit any further Christmas market on a Friday afternoon perhaps with less crowds.

I really enjoy the U-Bahn rides home from the city, it’s 30 minutes to, aehm, unwind…

just resting…

Tomorrow is Tessa’s birthday…

Tschuess

Friday was cold…

On my walk this morning I saw a small puddle that was frozen over…Jack Frost had visited over night…

The frozen puddle

the leaves underneath my feet were no longer rustling but crunching…

and the sun was only just coming up and visible around 8:45am although day light was there earlier…

…no idea why the photos went all odd and weird today..

I could just see the first sun lights.

Arriba Bad this time with photos

On Thursday afternoon we did go back to the pool, this time with Max also.  I must admit I spend a little bit of time lounging about in the outdoor pool, then heated up in the indoor spa pool and then headed off for the showers only to retreat to the lounge chairs for the rest of the afternoon armed with the camera.

Here is what I saw:

This is the relaxed ‘tropical pool’ area which also has waves every half hour.

This is the outside pool, which is my favourite, Above it looms the silver slide which whips you around from side to side. The children really like it, but I only did it once.

This is another view of the silver slide.

This is the ‘Wildwasser Kanal’, the ‘wild water channel’. The kids’s favourite. The current is really strong and every so often there is a pool of rushing water that the sliding person get wooshed into and I ended up with a lot of wild water up my nostrils every time I used this slide. It was great fun and slightly addictive though. Tessa tells me I should have sat up rather than more or less lying down and then I wouldn’t have ended up with wild water up my nose…

The promised movies didn’t work, I couldn’t find them.  Sorry.

I will know how all of this stuff works once I am back home…
